Works on invented languages usually classify the languages into three categories. Languages like the Philosophical Language of John Wilkins, which are completely created from scratch, are called a priori languages. Languages like Esperanto, which take most of their material from existing natural languages, are called a posteriori languages. Languages like Volapük, which contain elements of both types, are categorized as mixed. There isn't always total agreement on which category a particular language should be in (especially for mixed languages), but you can usually tell what type a language falls under just by looking at it. Here are some examples organized by three broad types:

A Priori Languages

A priori languages are completely created from scratch. They generally make use of some kind of classification system where letters, numbers, or symbols stand for categories of meaning. For example, in the a priori language Babm, all words having to do with language start with 'b'. As you see below, it is pretty much impossible to guess the meaning of a sentence in an a priori language just by looking at it.

Mixed Languages

Mixed languages generally make use of roots from natural languages in combination with endings and other elements fashioned according to the a priori categorization techinique. Sometimes, if you squint hard, you can partially identify a word in one of these sentences provided you know what the sentence means.

A Posteriori Languages

A posteriori languages are based on existing natural languages. They generally simplify and regularize the grammar of their source languages and mix roots from different languages together. It tends to be easy to guess the meaning of sentences in these languages if you have some familiarity with the source languages.

Other Languages

Throughout history, the purpose of language invention has for the most part been to improve on natural language and create a universal language for real world use. But sometimes, and increasingly more commonly, inventors make languages for artistic purposes only, crafting languages to satisfy a vision of what a language should be. These projects may incorporate elements of a priori, mixed, or a posteriori strategies, but they belong in a category of their own.
